Rental Car Olympics: Car & Driver pits Ford Mustang against Cadillac CTS4, Lincoln Town Car and Jeep Compass
Car and Driver set out to find the true heavy weight champion of the rental car fleets. The problem, how to best compare cars from differ classes that target customers with differing needs? The answer: Vehicle Sumo Wrestling, Burnout Contest, Reverse Racing, and parallel parking slides. Car and Driver pushes the limits of four rental cars (and their rental car agreements) in this quest for Olympic Gold.
So how did they do? Both the Ford Mustang and the Lincoln Town Car (American’s prototypical rental car) performed well across the board. The loser? No surprises there either. The Jeep Compass comes in dead last in any event or real world situation you put it in.
Oddly enough the Lincoln Town Car blazes from 0-60 in 9.2 seconds in reverse, just 1.1 seconds slower than it takes going forward.

To find out we put together an octathlon of events at and around the that would help us learn a thing or two about rental cars as well as the agencies that rent them…. Each of the four participating staffers is to walk up to a rental-car agency s counter and request a car with all the trimmings.
